People from other places in the country have a lot to say about Florida man and Florida culture, but Tampa is by far the exception and one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. Tampa is a tropical waterfront city with a lively foodie, coffee, bar, and night life scene. After living in Tampa for almost five years I compiled a list of essentials to check out if you’re visiting or new to the area.
Coffee
- The Lab Coffee
- The Lab was my home coffee shop while I lived in Tampa. I loved it so much I moved from the other side of town into an apartment complex that was built right next to it. There’s no one in the Tampa Bay Area that is roasting coffee like these guys do. Their flavors are bold and exotic, their space is beautiful and encourages community, and the baristas are always kind and down for a chat.
- Union Coffee Co
- Union is another gem in the Tampa Bay coffee scene. What started out as a a single guy riding a bike around town serving nitro coffee has turned into a luxury coffee experience located in the Armature Works food hall in the middle of downtown. They’re always serving the best beans and are incredibly knowledgable.
- Oxford Exchange
- Oxford exchange combines architecture and elegance like you would only find in Downton Abbey with Teavana Tea, Buddy Brew Coffee, and gourmet dining. This is a popular spot for brunch or any sort of celebration. It’s also a local favorite to rent out for weddings and other gatherings.
Food
- Ichicoro
- Ichicoro is the best ramen in town. Need I say more?
- Armature Works Food Hall
- Tampa has hopped on the food hall bandwagon and it’s been a huge success. You’ll find all sorts of restaurants, coffee, booze, desserts, homegoods, and waterfront views at this Tampa staple.
- Ulele
- Located on the waterfront, Ulele is truly some of the best dining I’ve had in Tampa. Bold flavors and eclectic experimental dishes will keep you coming back to try the full menu.
- Datz + Dough
- Imagine if your 5 year old nephew and a gourmet culinary chef started a restaurant and dessert factory. You would get something a lot like Datz. Their eclectic American dishes like Fried Mac N Cheese Bun Hamburgers, Frozé machine cocktails, and donut ice cream cones are the ultimate junk food lovers dream come true.
Nightlife
- Ybor City (AKA Cigar City)
- Home to all of Tampa’s debauchery, Ybor is the prime stop for breweries, clubs, tattoo/piercing shops, burlesque, bars, cigars, and all other carnal desires. During the day you’ll find that Ybor is pretty tame (unless it’s Gasperella), but as soon as the sun goes down all the freaks come out to play.
- Sum R&R
- SumR&R is the go to for underground electronic dubstep music events. These guys are bringing in top talent to smaller venues and run their own record label. Look for their events going forward once quarantine ends.
- Sunset Music Festival
- Sunset music festival is one of the staples for Tampa’s nightlife / festival culture. If you’ve never been to a music festival this is a great one to start off with. House music and dubstep fans will particularly enjoy this one.
